Switching broadband provider in the UK
In short
How to switch broadband provider in the UK under the One Touch Switch process — what to do, what to say, and how long it takes.
Since September 2024, switching UK broadband providers uses One Touch Switch (OTS). You contact your new provider only — they handle everything, including notifying your old one.
The steps
- Get a quote from the new provider (that's us, hopefully).
- Accept the Contract Summary.
- New provider triggers OTS.
- Old provider sends you a switching information notice — read it (any ETF, any final bill).
- On the switch date, the line flips. Usually zero downtime; occasionally a few minutes.
What you don't have to do
- Call your old provider to cancel. OTS does it. Cancelling manually can actually break the switch.
- Time it perfectly. Overlap is compensated per Ofcom rules if it goes wrong.
Fees to watch for
If you're inside a fixed term with your old provider, an early-termination fee may apply. It'll be on the switching information notice. Some providers refund your ETF; ask.
FAQ
How long does a switch take? Typically 10–14 days from acceptance.
Do I need a new router? Yes — each ISP's router has its login credentials baked in. We ship yours before your switch date.
