How to switch broadband in the UK

Since September 2024, switching broadband in the UK has been genuinely simple. The One Touch Switch (OTS) rules mean the new provider handles everything, and you'll never be left disconnected between contracts.

    The short answer

Sign up with your new provider. They'll trigger the One Touch Switch process, notify your old provider, and coordinate the changeover. You don't need to call anyone — it's handled automatically.

    01

    Step 1: Check availability

Enter your postcode with the new provider. This confirms your address is in coverage and shows which speed tier your line supports.

    02

Step 2: Choose your plan and sign up

Pick the address-specific service and complete the order. Any provisional activation or switch date remains subject to network and supplier confirmation unless expressly committed.

    03

Step 3: One Touch Switch does the rest

Your new provider tells your old provider to stop the service on the changeover date. Any early-termination fees the old provider charges must be disclosed up-front so you can accept or cancel.

    04

Step 4: Router arrives, service goes live

Your new router arrives a few days before activation. Plug it in on the go-live date — most switches are designed to minimise disruption, but a short outage can occur.

    FAQs

Where One Touch Switch applies, you normally start with the gaining provider and do not separately cancel the broadband service being switched. Follow any service-specific instructions supplied for your order.

A brief outage can occur. The expected date, engineer requirement and any known downtime risk depend on the actual services and are confirmed for the order.

Your current provider's switching information should identify any applicable termination charge or other relevant contract information. Review that information and your accepted terms before proceeding.

Number transfer is often possible, but it must be checked for the actual service and number. Do not assume a port is guaranteed until it is confirmed.
