Broadband speed test guide
In short
How to run a proper broadband speed test — wired vs wireless, what to compare to, and when to escalate.
Rule 1: Ethernet only
Wi-Fi tests measure Wi-Fi. If you want to know your broadband speed, use a cable.
Rule 2: One device at a time
Nothing else running. No downloads, no cloud sync, no phones streaming.
Rule 3: Reputable test
Use speedtest.net or your provider's own tester. Avoid random "how fast is my internet?" pages.
Rule 4: Compare to the estimate, not the headline
Your Contract Summary lists a guaranteed minimum download and an estimated range. Compare to the range.
Rule 5: Test at multiple times
Peak (7–9pm) speeds are always slightly lower than off-peak. Test both.
When to escalate
- Multiple wired tests come in below the guaranteed minimum.
- Speeds have suddenly dropped 30%+.
- Ping is >100 ms consistently on a wired test.
Contact support with your test results and we'll investigate the line.
