How to test broadband speed correctly
In short
The right way to speed-test so the result actually reflects your broadband, not your Wi-Fi.
A speed test result is only useful if you test the right thing.
The correct way
- Plug your laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Close other apps.
- Restart the router if you haven't in the last day.
- Go to speedtest.net or fast.com.
- Note the download speed, upload speed, and ping.
Why Ethernet matters
Wi-Fi speed depends on where you stand, what walls are in the way, how old your device is, and how busy the frequency is. Ethernet cuts out every one of those variables.
What is normal
For an OCCTA 150Mbps plan on Ethernet you should see 130–160Mbps at any time of day. Occasional dips of 10–20% during peak hours (7–10pm) are normal on some connections.
When it's a problem
- Speed is consistently below 60% of your plan on Ethernet.
- Ping is above 60ms to nearby UK servers.
- Regular packet loss.
Send us your test result including download, upload, ping and the time you tested.
