Slow Wi-Fi troubleshooting
In short
Fix slow Wi-Fi in under 10 minutes — a step-by-step checklist that solves 90% of complaints.
Slow Wi-Fi is almost never your broadband — it's usually Wi-Fi. Work through this in order.
1. Restart the router
Unplug for 30 seconds. Plug back in. Wait 5 minutes.
2. Test with an Ethernet cable
Plug a laptop directly into the router with an Ethernet cable and run speedtest.net. If this speed is normal, your broadband is fine — the problem is Wi-Fi. If this speed is low, the problem is the line: contact us.
3. Move closer to the router
Wi-Fi loses strength with distance and every wall. Same room = full speed. Two walls away = often half.
4. Try 5GHz for the room you're in
5GHz is fast but short-range. 2.4GHz is slower but reaches further. Use whichever suits the room.
5. Check how many devices are streaming
30+ devices sharing one router will always feel slow.
6. Update the device
Old phones and laptops have old Wi-Fi radios that cap the speed regardless of how fast your broadband is.
