Digital Voice setup and safety guide
In short
A step-by-step guide to setting up OCCTA Digital Voice safely — including alarms, telecare, and power-cut backup.
Before you switch
Tell us about any of the following at your address:
- Personal alarm / pendant
- Telecare box
- Older care-line phone
- Alarm dialler for a burglar alarm
- Fax machine (yes, still used in some places)
Any of these may need checking or replacing before you move to Digital Voice.
Step 1: Physical setup
Digital Voice phones plug into the green telephone port on the back of the router, not the wall socket.
Step 2: Test call
Ring a friend's mobile. Voice quality should be clear.
Step 3: Power-cut plan
Digital Voice doesn't work in a power cut. If anyone at the address relies on the landline for a medical or care service, we provide a free battery backup unit and won't migrate you without one.
Step 4: 999 calls
Digital Voice 999 calls work exactly as before, provided the router has power. In a power cut, use a mobile.
Step 5: Tell people
If you use the landline as a contact number for a doctor, school or vulnerable relative, they don't need to know anything technical — the number stays the same.
