Broadband activation: what actually happens
In short
What actually happens on broadband activation day — engineer visit or not, when the line goes live, and what to have ready.
Activation day sounds dramatic. It usually isn't. Here's the plain sequence.
If you already have a working line
Openreach flips the line to your new provider between 8am and 6pm on the switch date. Your old service stops working, the new one starts. No engineer visit; no downtime longer than a few minutes on most fibre lines.
If it's a brand-new line or an FTTP install
An Openreach engineer visits during a 4-hour slot. They'll fit a new socket, run fibre into the property if needed, and test the line. Expect them to be on-site 45–90 minutes.
What to have ready
- Router plugged in and powered on (or ready to plug in).
- Someone at home, 18+, for engineer appointments.
- Loft/cupboard access if the line enters that way.
What can go wrong (rarely)
- Openreach can be delayed; we'll email and text you if the slot moves.
- Some line faults are only found during install; the engineer will book a follow-up if so.
After activation
Give it 10 days for the line to auto-tune to its best stable speed. Only then do a proper speed test.
