How to read a broadband Contract Summary
In short
A step-by-step guide to reading your UK broadband Contract Summary — the Ofcom-mandated one-page document that tells you what you're really signing up for.
Every UK broadband provider must give you a Contract Summary before you sign — a one-page document set out in a format Ofcom defines. Here's how to read it in under five minutes.
1. Main features
Speed estimate (download / upload), any data cap, what's included (router, calls, engineer visit).
2. Price and payment
The monthly price you'll actually pay, whether VAT is included, one-off charges (setup, activation), and any promotional-period expiry.
3. Contract length and price rises
If there's a fixed term, it says so here. If prices rise mid-contract, the exact clause is spelled out.
4. Switching, cooling-off and cancellation
The 14-day cooling-off window, notice period after that, and any early-termination fee.
5. Accessibility and vulnerable-customer support
Look for how to request bills in large print, extra time for support calls, or priority fault fixing.
Red flags to watch
- Price rise clauses that don't cap the increase.
- "Introductory" pricing that expires without warning.
- Setup fees hidden below the monthly headline.
