What is pro-rata billing?
In short
Pro-rata billing charges you only for the days you actually had service in the billing month. Here's how it works on your broadband invoice.
"Pro-rata" is Latin lawyer-speak for "in proportion to". On a broadband invoice, it means you're charged only for the days you actually had service in a part-month.
The maths
Monthly price ÷ days in the month × days you had service.
Example: £30/month, 30-day month, service live for 10 days = £30 ÷ 30 × 10 = £10 pro-rata.
When you'll see pro-rata
- Your first ever invoice (part-month between go-live and your billing day).
- If you switch billing day mid-month.
- Final bill on cancellation, covering only the days up to your leave date.
What it isn't
Pro-rata is not a discount, a refund or a penalty. It's just fair maths.
FAQ
Do you pro-rata upgrades? Yes — if you upgrade mid-month you pay the difference pro-rata to the end of the current billing period.
