Wi-Fi troubleshooting checklist
In short
A 10-step Wi-Fi troubleshooting checklist for OCCTA customers — from placement to hardware to line issues.
Work through these in order — each step is quick.
- Reboot the router. 30-second power cycle. Fixes half of everything.
- Move closer. Same room as the router. Does speed jump? It's a Wi-Fi range issue.
- Test on Ethernet. Plug laptop directly into the router. If Ethernet is fast, Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, not the line.
- Check the lights. Any red or flashing broadband light? See Router lights explained.
- Check for congestion. Streaming + gaming + video calls at once? Even 200 Mbps struggles.
- Change the channel. In the router admin, switch Wi-Fi channel; auto-select doesn't always pick well.
- Update the device. Old phones/laptops cap Wi-Fi speeds hard.
- Reset network settings on the device. Fixes stuck DNS and cached bad connections.
- Try 5 GHz only. Short range, but much faster and less crowded.
- Contact us. If you've done all the above, raise a ticket. We can see line-quality data from our side.
